The "EMPOWERED” Seminar

Who should attend?

·         Families with a loved one in addiction or recovery.

·        Youth workers, church leaders or any person who wishes to know more about addiction and recovery management.
·        An individual who wants to learn about overcoming the affects of their addiction and how to implement recovery principles.

How did the seminars start?

By working with parents and spouses of addicted loved ones and we recognised the need to 'empower' families to overcome the devastating affects of addiction. We recognised that families needed to be educated about drugs but more specifically about addiction and how to support a loved one in recovery. We found that churches wanted to be informed and wanted to support people and their families who were affected by addiction. We realized that if parents and spouses took action earlier they could lesson the damage to the addict and the family.

What is it about?

People are EMPOWERED to overcome and restore the damage in their own lives caused by addiction
They learn how to recognize warning signs and how to take action before relapse.
Recovery principles are defined
New understanding helps them to develop new coping skills.
Families recognise that they are not alone in addiction and helps them to make sense of the chaos they experienced.
People learn how to support a person in recovery.
Boundaries and communication skills are improved.
People desire to continue with their healing process and are encouraged to start the 12 step Celebrate Recovery program.
People want to get involved and help others who have been hurt and damaged by addiction
People leave with Hope.

What people have said about the seminar:

"We've recently attended the ‘Empowered' seminar and found it an extremely helpful tool to get parents to understand the dynamics of recovery. It's highly motivating and serves to inspire parents, youth workers and anyone wanting to know more about the recovery of drug addiction and put the necessary principals in place.

As a recovery support group we highly recommend this seminar to complete any holistic recovery process.."

-Pastor Kennith de Kock. REACH, Word and Life, Boksburg

"The 'Empowered' seminar offered by Mighty Wings was precisely what the name conveyed! I only wish it had been available to us as parents of two addicted children at the time that the bomb exploded and we became aware of the destruction in our children's lives. In my opinion an absolute 'must attend' for anyone exposed to the devastating effects of addiction, be it directly or indirectly."

 -Fedor Schiefer

"My name is Bev and I am the mother of a drug addict.

My son had fallen into the drug scene, he was doing, CAT, TIK & DAGGA.

I desperately tried to help him at home but time and time again he went back to the drugs.

Eventually I realised that all I could do was sit back and watch him destroying my family and slowly kill himself, my heart was breaking and I was powerless to help him ………………

Eventually after much help from Carol and Rodney at Mighty Wings I managed to get my son to go to a long term rehabilitation centre.

I wanted to help my son in his attempt to give up drugs so I attended the Empowered seminar but I came away with much more than this.

I walked into this seminar a broken mother thinking that my situation was unique and that no one else had experienced the problems that I had with my son’s addiction.

What I didn’t expect was that I would not only learn to help my son but to help myself too. I learned that all the things that I thought only my son was doing, all the bad behaviour and disrespect, the lying, steeling and the anger he was directing towards me was being experienced by mothers and fathers everywhere.

It has helped me to understand that the child that I was trying desperately to help did not see me or what he was doing to our family, he only saw the drug that was driving him to do whatever he needed to in order to satisfy that ache inside him.

I realised that I was not the bad mother that I thought I was and that NO parent knows how to deal with this problem. I was never taught how to deal with a child that would turn into a monster that only cared about getting his drug of choice.

I was dreading the time that my son would come home but after attending this seminar I now feel confident that I can not only cope with his return but also to help him continue in his recovery.

I now know how to recognise the signs he will be showing long before any relapse and will be able to help him to avoid this.

I highly recommend this seminar to anyone who is trying to cope with addiction in their lives or who would like to learn more about the massive effect that drugs have on our children.

I walked into the seminar POWERLESS and walked out EMPOWERED.”

"I'm a recovering Addict and attended this Empowered seminar. WOW - what an awesome seminar it was. Being a recovering addict that did not go to a rehab - this seminar has really equipped me in my own recovery and also to help other people in recovery. I think this seminar is a must for everybody, even if you don't know anybody who has an addiction problem, as you never know when this knowledge that you gain will come in handy - especially with drugs becoming such a huge problem in our society”.
