"My name is Bev and I am the mother of a drug addict.
 
My son had fallen into the drug scene, he was doing, CAT, TIK & DAGGA.
I desperately tried to help him at home but time and time again he went back to the drugs.
 
Eventually I realised that all I could do was sit back and watch him destroying my family and slowly kill himself, my heart was breaking and I was powerless to help him ………………
 
Eventually after much help from Carol and Rodney at Mighty Wings I managed to get my son to go to a long term rehabilitation centre.
 
I wanted to help my son in his attempt to give up drugs so I attended the Empowered seminar but I came away with much more than this.
 
I walked into this seminar a broken mother thinking that my situation was unique and that no one else had experienced the problems that I had with my son’s addiction.
What I didn’t expect was that I would not only learn to help my son but to help myself too. I learned that all the things that I thought only my son was doing, all the bad behaviour and disrespect, the lying, steeling and the anger he was directing towards me was being experienced by mothers and fathers everywhere.
 
It has helped me to understand that the child that I was trying desperately to help did not see me or what he was doing to our family, he only saw the drug that was driving him to do whatever he needed to in order to satisfy that ache inside him.
 
I realised that I was not the bad mother that I thought I was and that NO parent knows how to deal with this problem. I was never taught how to deal with a child that would turn into a monster that only cared about getting his drug of choice.
 
I was dreading the time that my son would come home but after attending this seminar I now feel confident that I can not only cope with his return but also to help him continue in his recovery.
I now know how to recognise the signs he will be showing long before any relapse and will be able to help him to avoid this.
 
I highly recommend this seminar to anyone who is trying to cope with addiction in their lives or who would like to learn more about the massive effect that drugs have on our children.

  The Empowered Seminar can probably be defined as the turning point in my battle against addiction. I never could have imagined that a single day could make such a massive difference in my life. Before the Seminar, I dreaded the thought of having every detail of my secret life exposed not only to me, but to my family as well. I thought that this would push us even further apart, but as it turned out I couldn’t have been more wrong. It was there that my family and I actively participated in learning for the first time about the power drugs have over you, and how their vicelike hold over you is all but shattered when the true nature of addiction is brought to light.

The Empowered Seminar taught me how to work my recovery on every level; being physical, spiritual, emotional, mental, financial, social and environmental. As well as all the types of addiction, stages of addiction and why I resort to using drugs. I am now able to recognize my warning signs on a few different levels, being physical, emotional and behavioural.
 
The effects of drug addiction has been made clear through the seminar, not only are the effects bad on myself, but for my family and my loved ones as well. The word recover has multiple definitions, being; regain possession, make up for, retrieve, get over, and bring or come back to life. The seminar has taught me to implement relapse prevention, commit to my recovery, to put boundaries in place and to manage my recovery. I have learnt through the seminar and my recovery plan that communication in any situation is key.
